I'm usually one to be very skeptical of those As Seen On TV ads, but one day I saw an ad for SmoothAway.  The product promises to get rid of hair and exfoliate skin painlessly and easily by simply rubbing it on yourself.  No creams or blades.

Curious, I decided to look it up online to see if I could find out how it works.

Anything that exfoliates has to be somewhat abrasive, I thought.  And to get rid of hair?  There's got to be some kind of slight tugging at the very least.  I couldn't find any descriptive article that revealed everything, but I found a ton of product reviews - some dissatisfied, but surprisingly, many were satisfied.  Well, if it's cheap enough, maybe I'll try it for myself, I thought.  Even if I don't use it in place of shaving, if it works, it'll be wonderful to use in a pinch or maybe it can get rid of some of my peach fuzz in some awkward parts of my body.

The next time I went to Bed Bath and Beyond I saw the product sold for $9.99. It includes a large buffer, a small buffer, several "replacement pads", and a travel case.  Plus, if I used a 20% coupon they always send in the mail it would be even cheaper.  Not bad.  I gave it a try.

The product comes with really simple directions to follow.  I felt the pad as I applied one to the buffer.  It felt somewhat finer than a "finishing" side of a metal nail file or a piece of sand paper that is so fine that you can't even feel any grains of sand.  I buffed some of my armhairs according to the instructions.  It actually worked!  Painlessly, too!  I tried it on some of the peach fuzz on my upper lip.  Gone!

But, here are some tips that they will not tell you in the ads:
*the pads will wear out quickly, especially if you use it on coarser hair like leg stubble.  I recommend using it only in a pinch on stubble or for peach fuzz.
*Although the ads say you can use it for a bikini line, don't!  The coarser the hair, the harder it is to remove, and I ended up irritating my line.  I wouldn't use it for armpit hair either, even if it is only stubble.
*I found it effective to buff in patches and to constantly brush off excess hair from the buffer so it would be more effective
*Do not press very hard with a brand new pad or it will hurt.  Rubbing too many times might also cause a little redness/irritation.  SmoothAway reminds me of sandpaper for humans, so be careful, and if you keep this idea in mind, you shouldn't hurt yourself.  Also, as the pad gets more worn, you may have to press harder than instructions recommend if you want to get the most out of that pad.  Or you could just replace it.
*Moisturize afterwards.  It might sting a little like razor burn, but usually I find that happens if I've pressed too hard or rubbed an area too many times.

SmoothAway can be found at BedBathandBeyond, Walgreens, etc.  There's also another product out there called SmoothLegs but I have yet to try it out.  Here's the official website, but I recommend getting it at a retail store because it's cheaper that way.
