I once read somewhere that, "We don't remember days, we remember moments." However, at today's chaotic, almost hectic pace we often forget to savor small pleasures while we strive for big things, big plans, big goals, big….big everything.
Somehow, in someway, we entered into a race to be the best or better than in shape or form, and sometimes, we lose sight of just being. Of just living for the moment, soaking in and savoring those beautiful moments that provide some of life's greatest pleasures. Our greatest joys. Especially in these winter months that we're in where a warm, soothing fire with crackling flames can be all that it takes. Or a good book, a bars of a song, a spectacular sunset, a great feast, or a timeless moment with a friend, a child, or a brother…these moments, if we stop long enough to enjoy, are the essence of life.

The other night was one that will be embedded into my mind, into my heart for a very long while. I feasted with my brother on a hearty meal and thirsted not just on ale but on conversation. There was no need for a television or a movie or blaring radio. We had our own stories. Tales that weren't commercialized or fabricated. Stories that came from our own imagination, our own experiences. Memories from us together, and from us apart.
The evening light had faded, hours had past without notice. There was a sweet smell that filled the house. The air was slightly cool but warm enough for comfort. I allowed my ears to soak in every second-every word spoken. It was perfect night.
That night provided far more than a brotherly memory. It was a life memory. It provided me with a snapshot of what life is like when you slow down enough to savor the moments.  On the way back to town, the next morning, as I drove through the stillness of the country roads, I took a look at the beautiful, bluish sky and slowed down , enough to say, Thank you, God, for giving me such a night.
