Home security systems, or alarm systems, as they are popularly referred to, are increasingly common. In reality, the market is huge, with only a number of major players, like ADT, Brinks(now called Broadview), and Protect America. . However, my experiences cum observations has led me to notice something peculiar about people's habits and choices. Many people I have seen install security systems, keep a key under their flower pot, or door mat. They go out, and there is always a spare key lying there. A thief would just have to look under the mat, find the key,and get in. If his luck is good, and the alarm is not activated, then he has a field day. The cops regularly come by to give speeches and tips on home safety, and this is one of the main points they stress on. They repeatedly tell the audience, to not leave their house key in most obvious places like doormats, or flower pots. Thieves know to look for them there. A gated community is safe only as long as the residents are aware of their neighbors, and are responsible citizens. What I would suggest is, instead of leaving a spare key under the mat, or flower pot, leave one with your next door neighbor, or friend inside the community. Elderly people living alone should, especially take note of such safety tips. Another deterrent is having a pet dog at home. Labradors, German shepherds, rottweilers, are by breed, large. Just their bark, or seeing them would make a potential thief think twice, whether robbing the house is worth the risk of getting bitten by the dog. Even small dogs play their role usefully, they can nip/ bite the feet of the thief. It is also a good idea to keep your cellphone, or car keys near your bed. So that in case, you hear someone trying to break in, you can call for help immediately. Having the car keys is an added advantage to warn others. You can press your car alarm, and if within reach, the alarm will start blaring, and sooner or later, someone is going to come out to see whose car it is. At the same time, the burglar will know this sound is sure to wake the neighbors, and will draw attention. So he will flee. Well, I hope on seeing this article, people in the business of home security make it a duty to warn their customers, not to leave spare keys outside. As more people take note, the safer our communities, neighborhoods will be.
