According to the World Health Organization, 30% of the world's male populations are cigarette smokers. Most of them come from younger age groups. Though most of them know that smoking is not good for their health, still they are having a hard time to quit. But what do they really get from smoking?
Cigarettes are simple looking but inside that paper wrapper are lots of toxins that can cause serious health threats. It's a fact that hundreds of chemicals are present inside a single cigarette stick. Here are some of the most common:
- Nicotine- is an alkaloid found mainly in tobacco leaves. In minimal amount, it acts as a stimulant but it is proven to be the major ingredient that causes the addiction. This is also used on pesticides making it fatal when consumed.
- Tar-also known as the total aerosol residue is the most toxic chemical found in cigarettes. It gathers up in the lungs causing lung diseases.
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)- is a dangerous gas produced from burning of any material. When inhaled and reached the lungs, it mixes with the blood and hemoglobin thus preventing the blood to circulate well.
- Hydrogen Cyanide- is a toxic gas which can be found in cigarette smoke. It causes a great damage to the heart and blood circulation. This gas is also used in pesticides and metal industry.
- Nitrogen Oxide-is basically composed of nitrogen and oxygen. It pollutes the environment and can cause a major damage in the respiratory system.
- Formaldehyde-is a chemical used as disinfectant and is also used to make other chemicals. It is used to manufacture household products and in paper and wood production industries. It is easily absorbed by the body and can cause irritation, vomiting and possibly death.
- Benzene-also present in cigarettes and can increase the risk of having leukemia. It is one of the most produced chemicals and is used as a solvent. In some cases, studies show that it can also cause bone marrow cancer.
- Ammonia-is a dangerous gas with a strong odor, used in fertilizers and cigarettes. It is used to intensify the effect of nicotine. It can cause irritation and burns.
Studies have shown that smoking cigarettes can cause a number of fatal diseases because of these toxins. Expert believes that smoking cessation or quitting can really prevent or decrease the risk of these diseases. The most common is respiratory diseases or illnesses involving the lungs and affects breathing. Emphysema is the illness of the lungs. It destroys the lung tissues and capillaries which results in hyperventilating and difficulty in breathing. In some cases, finger clubbing can be observed. Asthma is another respiratory disease one can get from smoking addiction. It involves the inflammation and narrowing of the airways which cause wheezing, coughing and difficulty in breathing. Lung Cancer is one the most fatal type of cancer. Even with people who were given the appropriate treatment, only a few survived. The cancer cells are fast-spreading thus making it hard to treat. Based on studies, 87% of lung cancer deaths are caused by excessive cigarette smoking. There are more other diseases and illnesses a person can get from smoking like cardiovascular diseases. Smoking is a big contributing factor to having coronary heart disease, increase in blood pressure and blood clotting. A study made by researchers proves that smoking not only damages the lungs and heart but other organ such as liver, kidneys and brain as well because smoking decreases the level of a certain enzyme in the brain and other organs. Smoking is a killer habit but the worse part is it is done in a slow manner, it will destroy your organs without you realizing it and the moment that you do, it will be too late. Your body will suffer from the effects of it and once the damage has been done, there is no turning back.
