Healthy living is one of the most common things people put in their New Year's resolution list. With so many illnesses in the world today, it makes sense to take good care of your body. However, we often get caught up in our day to day activities that we forget to stay healthy. So how can we stick to this lifestyle without spending hours in the gym? The answer is simple- eat five servings of fruits and vegetables everyday.

In the fight against cancer, anti-oxidants remain a powerful ally because they stop the growth and development of cancer cells if taken before or during the early stages. These can be found in green leafy vegetables such as lettuce and broccoli, and in dark colored berries such as raspberries and blueberries.

In the prevention of heart diseases, studies have shown that fruits and vegetables containing potassium, fiber, folic acid and anti-oxidants lower the chances of people developing such problems. Grapes, pomegranate and oranges are the best fruit choices for this category while vegetables such as broccoli and spinach are also worth mentioning. They have powerful protective mechanisms to ward off heart diseases.

In the prevention of kidney complications, lemons prove to be very helpful. These and other citrus fruits contain citrates which hinders the formation of kidney stones. Additionally, natural fiber-enriched vegetables such as legumes, slows down the digestion of carbohydrates in the body which would reduce the risk of diabetes.

There are a variety of ways that you can take your daily dose of fruits and vegetables. You can eat them as snacks, cut them up and refrigerate them. Remember, they taste a whole lot better when cold. You can also buy canned juice as long as it's 100% natural, without the sweeteners. Sugars are not very good for anyone's health. Lastly, tossed salads and desserts with a variety of fruits and vegetables would make great additions to your meals.

Taking fruits and vegetables everyday is an inexpensive and convenient way to boost up your healthy lifestyle. It's so easy to get started- you can even start right now. No more paying monthly fees to work out and sweat. No need to read pages and pages of magazines and books just so you can be inspired to go to the gym. All you have to do is go to the nearest supermarket, grab an armload of fruits and vegetables and you're all set to fulfilling one of your most important New Year's resolutions.
