The Church teaches that God defined marriage from the beginning with the story of Adam and Eve. Moreover, it teaches that marriage is a sacrament. In other words, it is a sign that points to a greater reality. Marriage is supposed to imitate the love and the life that exists in the Trinity when consummated through sex. The two become one flesh. One gives everything he is and everything he has to the other, who receives and gives back. The couple unites and produces fruit, namely, children. In much the same way, God the Father pours out everything He is and has to God the Son. He receives, gives it all back. From that relationship of love precedes the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.According to Church teachings, because marriage is supposed to imitate the Trinity, the Church cannot condone gay marriage any more than it can condone sex outside of marriage (which is essentially lying with one's body saying "I give myself totally and completely to you" in a relationship that isn't permanent). It is impossible to imitate the Trinity in a homosexual union. The Church teaches that this type of sexual act runs contrary to the natural law (it cannot produce fruit), and it cites scripture when stating that the act is sinful. If a homosexual can't have sex or marry, then what is he or she to do? The Church is up front about this, too: "Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection." (CCC 2359) I doubt any homosexual would like this answer. Nor would they be happy when learning that the Church views homosexuality as one of many disorders stemming from original sin. But give the Church some credit for being consistent with its teachings and for seeing them for more than simply their sexual orientation. Unlike many other groups, the Church will not condemn a person to hell simply because they happen to have a homosexual orientation. Nor will they condone violence or engage terrorism. The Church believes that homosexuals who live chaste lives according to the Gospel can get to Heaven, and the Church will do everything it can to help those people get to Heaven, including disagreeing with the general public that says it's ok to engage in homosexual acts.
