Identity Theft Strikes Again
After doing some research on new virus and spyware threats, I came across a new threat that I believe everyone should know about. It’s called TSPY_BANKER.GBW. The purpose of this piece of spyware is, it drops several files on the affected system, including a copy of itself. It also modifies the Windows registry so that it will run at every system startup. It monitors the Internet Explorer activities of the affected system, specifically the address and title bar. It recreates a legitimate Web site with a spoofed login page if a user visits certain banking sites. The said routine tricks the user into giving out sensitive account-related information. This spyware logs keystrokes entered by the user in the user name and password fields of the spoofed login page. It sends any stolen data to specified e-mail addresses using its own Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) engine. I would recommend, if you haven’t already, to go and purchase some spyware and virus protection. My personal favorite is Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, as it has features that will protect you while you surf the web and access your online banking accounts. If you don’t have the time to run out to your local retail store, you can buy it directly from Trend Micros website at http://us.trendmicro.com/us/home/home-user/. Install the software and do a full scan on your computer. This could take a few hours, so while it scans, I don’t recommend using the computer while the scan is in process.
