Becoming an affiliate is a great way to make money, if you do it right. Most affiliates go about it all wrong, which is about half the reason affiliate marketing has such a bad name. The other half can be attributed to scams, and all other types of illegitimate affiliate programs. When considering becoming an affiliate to a particular company, do a little research on the company first. Make sure they have been around awhile, most scams are discovered within 6 - 12 months. A general rule is to find the company who has been in business the longest. This should prevent you from getting scammed. Another thing to consider is the compensation plan: do you get paid 1 time for work you have done; or are you paid over and over for the same work. Being paid only 1 time for work you have done is known as active income. This is the basis of almost any "job" or "career" that is available in the "real" world. Being paid over and over is known as residual income, this is by far the better way to go. Residual income can be built by promoting a "service product" as an affiliate. A service product is any product that is sold on a subscription basis. Once you have decided on the right company, it is time to start promoting. The easiest product/service to promote is one you have taken a personal interest in and honestly believe in. When you have a personal interest in a product you tend to talk more passionately, to more people about the product. There are many ways to promote affiliate links or products. Social networking has become really popular and very effective. Social networks like Twitter, Facebook and the lesser known 6 Degrees are great ways to get your message out to many people in a relatively short time. Article marketing is another great way to promote your affiliate links or product. The important thing to remember when trying your hand in article marketing: do not write an article like a sales pitch. Articles are meant to be informative first and promotional second. Directory submission is yet another great way to get your affiliate links to the masses. There are literally 1000's of directories that you can submit your link to. I suggest going for the higher ranked directories first then focusing on the lower ranked directories. It is important to remember to submit to relevant categories in each directory. Here you can download a free list of 6000 directories to get you started. Creating backlinks is an important step to getting your affiliate links the most exposure possible. Forum signatures are a great way to get exposure for your backlinks. Joining relative forums and posting your links in your signature will provide the best results. Now if you are only in affiliate marketing for an active income you can pretty much stop reading here. For those of you who are in affiliate marketing for the real money can continue reading. Now if you are an affiliate of a service product, such as Global Domains International( which pays $1/ month for every person that is in you network ), you can build a nice residual income. The important thing to remember is once you have a few people in your network, take care of them. Give them all the advice and encouragement you can. Their success is your success. The more help you offer, the more trust is built between your network, the easier it is to build a successful network and in turn easier it becomes to build a substantial network.
