Satellite Installation can be a good field to enter. Most people will not give up their entertainment, no matter how bad the economy is getting. Plus, many people who have watched television via an antenna now are having to find alternatives because they are not receiving a clear digital signal where they live. But what steps do you need to take to become a satellite installer? You need to be trained. You need to know how to install the outside dishes, the inside receivers, DVR's, and High Definition receivers. You also need to know how to run wire and you need to know how to properly connect and weatherize the wiring and the outside dish. You need to be in good physical shape to this type of work. You will need to be able to climb ladders, get on roofs, get into attics and underneath houses into crawl spaces. But you also need to be able to work with the public. You need to be able to handle picky customers, rude customers, customers who have barking dogs, screaming kids and messy houses (not to mention the possibility of seeing a crime or two committed, such as snorting coke, dealing drugs, or playing around with guns). How do you get trained? A few companies will train you and pay you at the same time. Most will not. Most companies will allow you to do what is called a ride along for training purposes. A ride along means that you will spend an X amount of time working with a seasoned installer, who will hopefully show you and teach you how to get many jobs done. After training, you need to begin gathering up the tools you will need. The main tool you will need is a signal reader that will help you find your satellite signal. The best one of these to buy is called a birdog. But you will also need many other tools such as: a compass/inclinometer, crimpers, screwdrivers, a rechargeable drill, ladders, flashlights, and pliers. Next you need to find a job. This can be easy or hard, depending on where you live. Bigger cities seem to have bigger markets, thus more companies. Where can you work? The main two satellite companies are Dish Network and Directv. There are many companies that hire out as dealers and installers for these two companies.
