He carries his guitar around with him. He wears tight pants, and like a million belts. His nails are probably painted black, and his hair is probably some strange color or a sad mixture of every color. He probably also only knows how to play Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the key of Awful flat. Yeah, you've probably run into this guy at least once. In my case, several occasions.

Here in Nashville, it's not at all uncommon to hear somebody, anybody, everybody say that they know how to play the guitar. In fact, if you're looking to join a band out here as a guitarist, you had better be really good, or at least drop dead sexy. It's very common, and totally cliched out here. And you all think you're cool for being able to bang out a couple of chords. I know talented guitar players, very talented. Like "Oh my God, I want you to have my babies!" talented. Yeah.

Sure, playing the guitar is cool. Your friends are probably getting tired of you playing the same Green Day song over and over again. And they don't want to hear your emo rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." We want to hear you play something original, something you wrote yourself. Even if it's a silly bit of nonsense.

I play the guitar, I'm pretty mediocre at it. I've written my own song, but it's nowhere near finished, and has absolutely no words. It sounds pretty though, and that's all I care about. I like to lead the worship at my church with my guitar, whose name is Harrison, by the way. I really like it. I know, however, that I am no rocker, and I am not great.

I don't know, I'm ready to see something new, less cliched. Like a rocker who is wearing a pin striped suit, playing the piano and singing his heart out. Someone who has real talent. I want to see a man who can play the guitar like it's his first love, and the only one that he's devoted to. I don't want to see the little emo kids stealing Three Days Grace's songs because they think they describe their lives perfectly.

Better yet, I want to see someone rocking out a keytar.
