| Rarely do we come across a movie which keeps you glued to our seat for its whole duration. Welcome to Dev D, a riveting movie which just can't be slotted in any genre mainstream or parallel cinema. You could, if you want to, slot it something between both these genres. Written and directed by the talented Anurag Kashyap [after the very ahead of its time No Smoking] Dev D is a very modern take on the evergreen novel of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay 'Devdas'. Dev [Abhay Deol] and Paro [Mahi Gill] are childhood sweethearts. Dev, son of a wealthy businessman and a London educated brat comes back to India after completing his studies. Paro comes from a middle-class background. Though it is assumed that both would eventually marry, this does not happen due to a lie which makes Dev spurn and insult Paro. By the time Dev realizes his folly, Paro has been married off to a wealthy widower. From here starts Dev's downfall into booze and drugs. Lenny [Kalki Koechlin] is a high school going girl of a Canadian mother and an Indian father. She is involved with a guy who films an intimate scene between them and circulates it via mms. [reminiscent of the DPS scandal]. The family goes back to Canada and father who cannot come to terms with it, shoots himself. She comes to Punjab after her mother distances herself from Lenny, but even here she is not comfortable and runs away to Delhi where she tries to contact her friends and none of them offer her any help. She lands up in a brothel where she can study in the day and work in the night. While watching Madhuri Dixit dance in the movie Devdas she changes her name to Chanda, a multilingual high class prostitute. By now, Dev has transformed into a complete druggie and stays in Delhi where even Paro stays with her husband. Dev asks Paro to meet him and calls her to his room. Dev wants her back in his life but Paro will have none of it. He even tries to make love with her but it is all futile. By now it is clear that all Dev loves is, himself and Paro very properly asks him to marry a mirror, touché. Chunni [Dibyendu Bhattacharya] is a pimp and introduces Dev to Chanda. Chunni takes care of every need of Dev. Dev stays with Chanda now. Chanda is falling for Dev but Dev as usual just loves Paro, though he does admit that he loves Chanda too. But Chanda is a prostitute and when Dev comes across another client, Dev barges out from there. Dev is involved in an accident which claims some lives. He is hospitalized for drug overdose. Meanwhile his ailing father passes away and so Dev goes back for the final rites. After that Dev instead of going back to Delhi spends the money for the lawyer in drugs and booze. He somehow lands up in Delhi with no money left. This is when he realizes that he loves Chanda and awaits her. Chanda who has left the brothel the same day when Dev had left her after finding the ring finds him at a roadside eatery. The music of Dev D is very very refreshing. Amit Trivedi who idolizes A.R. Rehman has given ground breaking music. Emotional Attyachar has become a hit all over India. This song has actually been sung by a Haryavni marriage band. The film has 18 tracks and none of them similar. Abhay Deol after doing movies like Manorama 6 Feet under, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye followed by this is on a song. He makes Dev look completely different, a complete misplaced individual. He is the pivotal guy in the whole film and is very well supported by Mahi and Kalki. The cinematography is refreshing to say the least and when it comes to direction, we bow down to the director Anurag Kashyap. |
