The Dilemma of Senior Gambling


Retirees and individuals, ages 65 and above, have been the constant visitors of casinos all over United States. A survey conducted in 2001 by McNeilly and Burke showed that gambling is the preferred social activity of some 6,957 senior citizens. In 1998, the percentage of senior gamblers jumped from 20% to 50%. This overwhelming statistics mainly involved around the fact that there are only a few social interactions for this particular age group.


Gambling can prove to be an addictive game for senior citizens, not only because of its potential high earnings but also its involvement to certain social groups. Going out to casinos can help bring out self- esteem; isolation will not be an issue anymore.


They are some seniors that would know their limit when entering casinos. The fun and inviting atmosphere of casinos keep them comfortable. They consider it as a form of entertainment. A simple way to keep their mind temporarily away from life’s difficulties.


One obvious problem though is when senior citizens become addicted to gambling. They are likely to be so.  It may go unnoticed, but savings have been dwindling down or even properties and personal possessions disappear one by one because of gambling. This can be a serious problem needing a serious solution. It is important to be aware of these signs of gambling dilemma.


He doesn’t mind about betting more money.
He has more frequent trip to casinos or even online gambling.
Gambling eats up most of his time and stays in a casino for a long period of time
Chronic mood swings due to winning or losing a game.
Borrowing money or selling personal things.


A more complicated problem arises when alcohol and drugs are taken before gambling. This can cloud one’s judgment and the ability to resist gambling becomes weak. Strongly discourage trips to casinos when a personal problem arises such as a death of a loved one, depression or stress.


If you can observe these symptoms to someone you know, whether it is an old friend, your grandmother or even your parents, don’t hesitate to get help immediately. There are organizations that provide counselors and professional assistance to help you with this particular crisis.


Gambling has its advantages and disadvantages. It can be an intriguing social activity to most senior citizens. Most of them visit gambling arenas to leave out loneliness and depression. Even at their age, show your love and attention for them. That gesture of your concern is beyond compare.
